A budget guide built on a dated official exchange rate and the official inflation figure rather than on numbers copied from older articles. It gives a direct verdict on $500, $1,000, $2,000 and ₺20,000 for a week, separates ground costs from flights, and answers honestly whether Turkey is still cheap.

Direct answer: A week in Turkey costs roughly $500 per person on a budget footing and around $2,000 at a comfortable standard, excluding flights, which vary widely by departure country. Every figure on this page is converted at the official Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye rate — 1 USD = 48.3195 TRY, bulletin dated 04/09/2026 — not at a rate copied from an older article.

Ask what a week in Turkey costs and you will get answers that differ by a factor of three. The usual reason is not disagreement about hotels; it is that one writer converted lira at a rate that expired years ago, another quoted a couple's total as though it were one person's, and a third folded flights into the number without saying so. Turkey is also no longer the bargain it was a few years ago, and residents will say so long before a travel blog does. This guide states the rate and the inflation figure it is built on, with dates attached, then separates what you spend on the ground from what you spend getting here.

Is your budget enough? The cost of travel in Turkey at $500, $1,000 and $2,000 a week

Budget (one week, per person)In liraTravel style it buysFlights included?Verdict
$500₺24,160Strict budget: hostels or simple hotels, local eateries, public transport, one or two paid sightsNoEnough, with discipline
$1,000₺48,320Mid-range: mid-tier hotel, mixed dining, two cities, paid attractionsNoEnough
$2,000₺96,639Comfortable: central accommodation, unrestricted dining, private toursNoMore than enough
₺20,000≈ $414Tight budget, best outside IstanbulNoOnly with real frugality

The arithmetic is stated rather than implied: each tier is a daily average × 7, converted at 48.3195 TRY per dollar on 04/09/2026. In euros (1 EUR = 56.1581 TRY), $1,000 is about €860; in Saudi riyals (1 SAR = 12.8680 TRY), it is about SAR 3,755.

The ₺20,000 line is the most revealing one. It is a figure that circulated for years as a reasonable weekly budget; at today's official rate it is $414. The number did not change — what it buys did.

Cost of travel in Turkey by trip style: what 7 and 10 days cost per person

Every tier below is the same money as the table above, expressed as a daily rate and then multiplied out. Ground cost only — international flights are added separately, because that is the item that makes published estimates disagree.

Travel stylePer day, on the ground7 days10 daysWhat it looks like
Budget$71 (₺3,431)$500$715Hostel or simple guesthouse, local eateries, İstanbulkart, one or two paid sights
Mid-range$143 (₺6,910)$1,000$1,4303-star hotel, mixed dining, two cities, a domestic flight, paid attractions
Comfortable$286 (₺13,819)$2,000$2,8604-star or central hotel, unrestricted dining, taxis, private tours

To get a total, add one return airfare from the table further down. A ten-day mid-range trip is about $1,612 from Riyadh ($1,430 + $182) and about $2,241 from New York ($1,430 + $811) per person at the fares observed on 06/09/2026. That is materially below the $2,400–$6,500 range circulating for a ten-day mid-range trip, and the gap is almost entirely accommodation: those estimates assume 4-star and above, which this page prices separately rather than folding in silently.

"The consumer price index (CPI) rose 31.51% annually and 1.84% monthly."
— Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), Consumer Price Index, August 2026, released 3 September 2026

What does 31.51% mean in practice? A lira price you read in an article a year ago corresponds to a figure roughly a third higher today, and food has risen faster still at 33.79%. That is why any lira number published without a rate date is effectively meaningless — and why the prices below carry the date they were captured rather than a vague "2026".

Daily cost of travel in Turkey: what you actually spend after landing

Ground cost is everything you spend after landing, and it is the part you can plan precisely because it does not depend on where you fly from. Lira prices move weekly, so every figure below carries the date it was observed and is given in dollars first with the lira equivalent in brackets.

ItemWhat actually sets the priceValue position in 2026Price, observed 06/09/2026

The Hagia Sophia line shows why sourcing matters. A lot of published advice tells visitors to buy a museum pass for it, while the Ministry of Culture and Tourism states plainly that the pass is not valid there — advice that costs the reader money instead of saving it. And Istanbul is not Turkey: changing city is the single largest lever on accommodation cost, which is the practical case for Turkish cities beyond Istanbul, and for reading our Istanbul hotels guide by district before you book a name you recognise.

Activity costs in Turkey: Cappadocia balloons, domestic flights and museum entry

Activities are where a carefully planned budget usually breaks, because two of the country's signature experiences are priced in euros and sold at wildly different rates depending on where you book them.

ActivityPrice per personWhat actually moves the price
Cappadocia hot-air balloon, standard sunrise flight€150–€450 (about $174–523); operators advertise standard flights from €80–200Basket size, flight duration and — above all — where you book. Flights are weather-dependent: the official Cappadocia balloon flight management body publishes suitability for each slot and cancels on unsuitable days
Domestic flight, Istanbul → CappadociaOne way from $30, return from $60Booking lead time and carrier. The same route on a flexible full-fare ticket is ₺5,713.84 (about $118)
Major museum or archaeological site€12–€25Each site is priced individually by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism; the Müzekart pass does not cover every one of them
Istanbul airport transfer to the city centreRegulated tariff — see the full breakdownVehicle class and route; the fares are published, which is why quoting a flat "taxi price" is unreliable — the detail is in our Istanbul airport transfer guide

The balloon line is the widest spread on this page, and it is not a quality difference. A flight booked through a hotel desk on arrival routinely costs two to three times the same operator's online price for the same basket, on the same morning.

Flight cost to Turkey by departure country, and the entry rules that change it

Flights are the largest variable in most budgets, and they are exactly what competing estimates silently fold in or leave out. There is a second variable that is rarely mentioned and can cost both money and time: entry requirements differ by nationality and by age band, and in some cases they restrict which airline you may fly.

Departure countryEntry requirement for Turkey (ordinary passport, tourism)Return airfare, economy, observed 06/09/2026

EgyptVisa required. Under 15 or over 45: e-visa with no extra condition. Aged 15–45: single-entry 30-day e-visa, conditional on holding a valid Schengen, US, UK or Ireland visa or residence permit and travelling with Turkish Airlines, AJet, Pegasus, Egypt Air or Air CairoCairo–Istanbul from $205 nonstop
AlgeriaUnder 15 and over 50: visa-exempt for 90 days within any 180. Aged 15–50: visa required, and the e-visa is available only to the 15–18 and 35–50 bands, conditional on a valid Schengen, US, UK or Ireland visa or residence permitAlgiers–Istanbul from $157, nonstop from $301

Source for the entry-requirement column: the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, re-verified 06/09/2026. One precise caveat for Algerian travellers: on the official text, ordinary-passport holders aged 18–35 fall into neither the exemption nor the e-visa route and must check with the consulate directly — the common claim that "Algerians get an e-visa" does not survive the source. As for the e-visa fee itself, there is no fixed published fee table; the official portal states that the fee depends on the travel document and appears only inside the application flow. If your nationality is not listed above, our Turkey visa guide carries the full official matrix.

This is also the whole explanation for the market's contradictory numbers. Two published estimates that differ by a factor of three are usually not in conflict at all: one includes flights and the other does not, one is per person and the other is per couple, and a third converted lira at an obsolete rate. None of them says which, so none of them can be checked. Flights and accommodation together are the two items most sensitive to booking lead time, and you can have Livist Travel build the trip from your departure city to a budget you set.

Why is Turkey so expensive for tourists now?

The honest answer: Turkey is no longer cheap in lira, but it remains competitive in dollars. With annual inflation at 31.51% in August 2026, someone earning in lira experiences an entirely different country from someone spending dollars or riyals. To measure that rather than assert it: the net minimum wage in Turkey for 2026 is ₺28,075.50 a month, which is about $581 at the 04/09/2026 rate. A full month at the minimum wage is roughly one visitor's mid-range week. That single comparison explains why residents say the country has become expensive while visitors often still find it reasonable.

  • Still clearly good value: city public transport at ₺46.20 a journey, local food away from tourist zones, intercity coaches and trains, many personal services.
  • No longer cheap: central Istanbul hotels, restaurants inside tourist zones, peak July–August accommodation, and entry fees priced in euros.

So the accurate label is neither "cheap" nor "expensive" but mid-cost, high-value — a distinction that matters when you are planning against a fixed number. Season choice moves your bill more than daily frugality does, which is the practical argument in our guide to the best time to visit Turkey, and the reason Antalya and the smaller provinces read so differently on a spreadsheet.

Cost of travel in Turkey for a week versus the cost of living in Turkey for a month

ItemTourist weekResident month
HousingHotel per night — the highest daily line: $38–52 for 3-star, $63–95 for 4-starMedian asking rent across Turkey ₺25,000 (about $517) and an Istanbul average of ₺44,332 (about $917), July 2026 market data, plus a deposit usually equal to one or two months
FoodRestaurants daily — $12–37 a day depending on where you eatSupermarket and home cooking — substantially lower, though food inflation ran at 33.79% over the year to August 2026
TransportTourist journeys and taxis — ₺46.20 a journeyMonthly transit pass (Mavi Kart) ₺3,628 (about $75)
Health coverTravel insurance for the tripPrivate residence policy, or state GSS at ₺7,927.20 per month for a resident foreigner (≈ $164)
Local income benchmark—Net minimum wage ₺28,075.50 (≈ $581)

One number here is routinely published wrong. The state health insurance premium for a resident foreigner is calculated on twice the gross minimum wage, giving ₺7,927.20 a month — roughly four times the premium quoted in much of the available content, because that lower figure applies to Turkish citizens, not foreigners. Note also what the rent line does to the picture: an Istanbul average rent of ₺44,332 exceeds the entire net minimum wage of ₺28,075.50, which is the clearest single statement of why residents and visitors describe the same country differently. If staying is a serious option, read the types of residence permits in Turkey and how tourist residence permit renewal works before you build a monthly budget.

Hidden costs that inflate your Turkey travel bill

  • Airport exchange counters usually carry the worst spread in the country. Change only what you need to reach the city.
  • Dynamic Currency Conversion: when a card terminal asks "lira or your own currency?", choosing your own currency hands the conversion rate to the local acquirer rather than your bank. Always choose lira.
  • The July–August peak affects accommodation more than any other line. Shifting your week or your city saves more than trimming daily spending.
  • Booking activities on arrival: the Cappadocia balloon is the clearest case, where a hotel-desk booking can cost two to three times the online price for the same flight.
  • Renting a car without checking the 2026 rules: since 27/02/2026, carrying a child under 15 without a child restraint system carries a ₺5,000 fine and a seatbelt violation ₺2,500, per the Official Gazette.
  • Tipping: Turkey has no official rule and no binding percentage. It is a social custom left to your judgement, and any percentage you read is a blog's opinion rather than a standard.

Plan your Turkey travel cost with Livist Group trip planning

If your budget is fixed, the difference between a good trip and a disappointing one is city and season, not extra spending. Livist Group refreshes the figures on this page against the official Central Bank rate rather than leaving them to age quietly, and will not build an itinerary on a number that collapses at the till. Send us your budget, your departure city and your dates, and ask Livist Group trip planning for an itinerary priced against your actual number — with the split between flights, accommodation and ground costs shown openly, and a straight answer if the number does not reach the destination you had in mind.
