Antalya 2026: A Province of 19 Districts — Choose the Place Before the Hotel

Antalya is not a walkable city: 20,591 km² and 19 districts by the Governorship’s own numbers. Where to stay, what to see, and how far Istanbul really is — with no figure lacking a source.

Antalya in six official numbers

Antalya is a Mediterranean province in south-west Türkiye: 20,591 km2, 2,777,677 residents, 19 districts. Its urban core is three adjoining districts, while Alanya, Side, Belek and Kemer are separate districts hours away — so choose the district before the hotel.

What ruins an Antalya trip is rarely the hotel choice. It is a misunderstanding: Antalya is not a single walkable city. It is a province of 20,591 km2 with 2,777,677 residents spread across 19 districts, according to the Antalya Governorship's own figures. The difference between staying in Kemer, Alanya or Kaleiçi is measured in hours of road, not blocks.

This guide builds the decision on official provincial and Ministry of Culture and Tourism data — not on a recycled "top ten" list.

Where Antalya is — and the city-versus-province distinction

Antalya is a province on Türkiye's Mediterranean coast, in the country's south-west. Its urban core is not one district but three adjoining ones: Kepez (649,102), Muratpaşa (510,887) and Konyaaltı (199,414). The Antalya Archaeological Museum itself sits in Muratpaşa.

The destinations you see in travel advertising are separate districts within the province:

District Population What travellers know it for
Alanya 371,547 Alanya Castle, the Red Tower, long beaches
Manavgat 266,480 Contains Side, its ancient theatre, and the Manavgat waterfall
Serik 147,062 Contains Belek — golf country and gated resorts
Kaş 63,957 Diving, rocky coastline, the Lycian Way
Kemer 52,339 Mountains dropping straight into the sea, seasonal hotels
Demre 28,075 Ancient Myra and the Church of St Nicholas

The practical rule: choose the district first, the hotel second. Doing it the other way round is how travellers end up based in Alanya discovering that what they came for is in Kaş.

Is Antalya the same thing as Türkiye?

No. Türkiye has 81 provinces and Antalya is one of them. The question recurs in search results because so much "holiday in Türkiye" advertising is marketed entirely on Antalya imagery. Historic Istanbul, Cappadocia and the Black Sea coast are different provinces with different climates and different itineraries — see Turkish cities worth visiting beyond Istanbul for the full map.

When to go: the season sets both price and crowding

Antalya's swimming season is long, which is precisely why prices swing so sharply month to month. Choosing between peak summer and the shoulder months is a budget decision before it is a weather one. The month-by-month detail is in the best time to visit Türkiye.

What to see — and the one official figure we will publish

The Antalya Archaeological Museum is the right starting point for understanding the region: its holdings come from Perge, one of antiquity's sculpture-production centres, from the Karain Cave, and from excavations at the Church of St Nicholas. The museum was named "Museum of the Year" by the Council of Europe in 1988 and received its "Excellence Award" in 2016.

  • Admission: €15 — per the museum's page on the official museums portal, muze.gov.tr.
  • Official address: Bahçelievler Mahallesi, Konyaaltı Caddesi No 88, Muratpaşa / Antalya.

We will not give you a price table for "all the ancient sites", because those fees are updated on the portal without notice. The nearby sites — Perge, Aspendos and the Side Theatre, Myra, Olympos, Phaselis, Patara — are all listed on muze.gov.tr with the fee shown on each page. Check the day before you go, not from an article.

How far is Antalya from Istanbul?

A recurring search, and the honest answer is that the figure depends on the route: Antalya sits on the Mediterranean in the south-west, Istanbul on the Bosphorus in the north-west, so a road journey crosses the width of Anatolia. Türkiye's official reference for road distances is the General Directorate of Highways (KGM), and we will not quote a number we cannot attribute to it.

Practically: most international visitors fly direct into Antalya Airport (AYT), or take a domestic hop from Istanbul. Anyone combining both cities in one trip should budget two transfer days inside the itinerary, not two transfer hours.

What does a week in Antalya cost?

There is no single honest number, because cost moves on four independent variables: season (peak versus shoulder is the largest single swing), district (resort Belek is not old-town Kaleiçi), board basis (all-inclusive versus bed-and-breakfast changes the entire food line), and transport (rental car versus hotel transfers).

The sound method is to build the budget line by line rather than copy it from an article. The methodology is in the cost of travel in Türkiye, and day-planning in building a Türkiye itinerary.

Before you book: confirm your visa position

Booking a hotel before checking the visa is a common and expensive mistake. Many nationalities are exempt, but exemption is conditional on duration and passport type, and there is a legal passport-validity rule that stops travellers at the gate. The official position for every Arab nationality is in our Turkey visa guide.
